You can travel all around the world and keep hanging out at white sandy beaches or taking selfies at your resort pool but there are many other reasons to travel and see new places. This is a site that's truly unique to Thailand and is something that most likely wouldn't be replicated anywhere else in the world.
The Maeklong Railway Market is exactly what it looks like, a local market built around an active train line. Locals walk the tracks seeking to purchase fresh fish and other foods from the merchants who have their goods literally on or right next to the tracks. There wasn't much for tourists to buy since it's mostly fresh foods but it was still cool to walk through.
Seconds before the train passes through, an announcement is made on a loudspeaker and all the merchants quickly slide their tables and fold up their tents to get out of the way in time. Spectators stand in the way to get their view of this unique site then quickly step back where they stand inches from the massive train. Once it passes, the merchants quickly set up shop again and it's back to business.
This was something I didn't plan on seeing when I went to Thailand but I'm extremely happy that we went. It was one of the more cool and unique sites I've seen in my travels. Highly recommended for future visitors to this beautiful country!
