Gear photos get a lot of love; PHOTOGRAPHERS LOVE GEAR! I don't remember what made me want to do this but I had an idea to shoot a product shot of my Sony A7S with the Alpha logo behind it. The fun part was that the A was going to be done with light painting.
I had these little pen LED lights that I bought off Amazon and it was a perfect tool for this job. I set the camera up on a Manfrotto tabletop tripod with a black backdrop in my living room with the lights all turned off. With a five second shutter, I managed to paint the "A" in the background and had enough time to add a splash of light on the camera afterwards. The light from painting the Alpha logo also made a nice rim light around the camera which was unintentional but looked really nice.
Although this was one of my favorite product shots I've ever made, my audience didn't think so. I have a few other gear photos that were super simple, just shot on a table or in my hands, which got more love than this one.
